DIPLOMA IN OPTOMETRY (3 YEAR PROGRAM)
Optometry is a healthcare profession that focuses on eye health, particularly refractive problems and how to correct them using lenses and other optical aids. The goal of the course is to teach students about many aspects of eye health, illnesses, diagnosis, and therapy. ELIGIBILITY
COURSE OBJECTIVES
To be able to accurately record vision and measure refraction error using retinoscopy and subjective refraction.
To learn how to utilise standard ophthalmology devices and equipment.
To be able to conduct operations such as tonometry, syringing, fundus photography, slit lamp examination, ophthalmoscopy, corneal staining, eye removal, and eye dressing.
To be able to recommend and prescribe low vision devices and spectacles.
To aid in routine ophthalmic procedures.
Students should be able to comprehend their professional and ethical responsibilities in ophthalmic care after the optometrist course and be prepared to participate in public health optometry projects for education and counselling.
CURRICULUM
Clinical optometrist, ocular pharmacotherapy, contact lens fitting, ocular pathology, evaluation and management of binocular vision, contact lens care and issues, and clinical methodology are among the major subjects addressed during the two-year training programme.
In the first year of their courses, students learn about general anatomy, physiology (cytology), histology, and osteology. They also study pathology, pharmacology, microbiology, and ocular pharmacology, among other things. The course also includes comprehensive ocular anatomy and physiology, as well as fundamental physics linked to light and physiological optics.
The diploma programme also includes hand hygiene and cross-infection prevention, as well as basic life support (BLS) and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
The second year of courses includes the study of eye disorders, mechanical optics and lenses, lens prescribing, tools and equipment used in the eye, communal ophthalmology, and optometry medicines. Nursing techniques such as vitals recording, oxygen treatment, nebulization, and IV infusion are also covered.
